Why you should never order lemons in your restaurant drinks
My love of lemons is legendary. So much in fact, that my family will give me lemon-inspired gifts for every occasion. I’ve said many times on air that if Lemon Pledge was edible, I think I would eat it.
But, on a recent weekend getaway, I think a lemon did me wrong, and now I feel about my beloved lemons a little differently. At least for now, anyway.
Mysterious illness during the holidays
My husband and I had a great time. Apart from the concert we wanted to attend by changing venue, things were going well. Our Airbnb was, ok. The walls were very thin and the appliances were noisy, but overall not too bad. It all got better because the play we went to see was both hilarious and amazing.
When we travel, we like to try different types of food. Usually we always share our food. That way we can both try more things. So on this trip, like all the others, we ate exactly the same food. except for one thing. On our last night, I ordered lemon with my ice water.
Around 1am I woke up and was violently ill until about 8am. It was horrible. I was the sick kind where you lay on the bathroom floor because you’re too sick to hold your head up. You know, the kind of sick person who needs a shower after every moment of extreme discomfort.
As we tried to figure out if I was really sick or just ate something bad, it all came down to lemon. I didn’t have a fever and we ate the exact same things except the lemon in my ice water.
Can lemon in your drinks make you sick?
…a study in the Journal of Environmental Health, researchers tested 76 lemon samples from 21 different restaurants over 43 visits and found that many lemons contained microorganisms, including some disease-causing pathogens. To minimize your risk a bit, squeeze the lemon into your drink instead of dropping the whole wedge in it. And if you see employees handling lemons with their bare hands, it might be best to stick with plain water.
So, YES, that’s the answer. Just to be sure, I also found a video supporting the lemon in my ice water theory making me sick.
You know, I knew the risks, I just chose to play roulette with lemons. I even wrote an article praising my restaurant redneck lemonade Recipe. I have also written articles on Why you should drink lemon in your water. I cured headaches and relieved anxiety with lemons. I like me some lemons.
I was so sick, however, that I will no longer ask for lemons in my drinks. That is, unless I’m at home where I know there’s been cross-contamination.
I still love them, though.
More Reasons to Slow Down Lemons in Your Drinks
Drinking lemon water regularly can cause enamel erosion or tooth decay due to the acid in citrus fruits. Too much lemon water can also lead to heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Ok then, only lemons at home, cooked in something, or the smell of Lemon Pledge. MDR
