Carmine’s hostess assaulted after asking women for proof of vaccination on the Upper West Side

UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) – Police say the hostess at an Upper West Side restaurant was assaulted after asking three out-of-town women to show proof of vaccination.

The incident was reported at Carmine’s restaurant at 2450 Broadway around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities said the three Texas women – a 44-year-old woman, her 21-year-old daughter and another 49-year-old woman – attempted to enter the restaurant.

It was then that the authorities say they assaulted the 24-year-old hostess who asked them for their proof of vaccination.

The suspects broke the hostess’s collar during the assault, but she refused medical treatment.

The three women were taken into custody and received court tickets.

The investigation of the incident is ongoing.

“Our goal is to serve our customers excellent cuisine, provide excellent service and excellent hospitality while ensuring the safety of our employees and customers while complying with government-mandated COVID-19 protocols,” said a spokesperson for Italian restaurant Carmine’s. “It is a shocking and tragic situation when one of our valued employees is assaulted for doing their job – as city policies require – and for trying to make a living. Our goal right now is to take care of our employee and the rest of our restaurant family. We are a family-style restaurant, and this is the absolute last experience that one of our employees should have and that any customer will witness. “

“Assaulting a restaurant worker for doing his job is heinous and should be punished,” said Andrew Rigie, executive director of the NYC Hospitality Alliance. “We call on the city and state of New York to immediately increase penalties for assaults on restaurant workers in New York in conjunction with the enforcement of the Covid-19 protocols.”

The NYC Hospitality Alliance is also calling on Mayor Bill de Blasio to increase public awareness of vaccine requirements for indoor meals to the public – especially visitors who may not be aware of the policy.
