Best Sips is a look back at some of the most incredible drinks – alcoholic or not – that we’ve had in the past month. Those who have renewed our love for established places; caught our attention during a new opening; or freshly impressed by the creativity and skill of Hong Kong’s talented bartenders and mixologists. From drinks at charming dive bars to award-winning aperitifs at five-star establishments, these are the best drinks to try in Hong Kong; drinks for which we recommend you make a special trip.


The beverage: Coconut Lassie (HK $ 90)

Some drinks are put on a menu for more convenience. The ones that worry you already when you cross the threshold of the restaurant. The ones you order on autopilot when you’re seated, without having to repeatedly flip through the drink list. Those who change with the occasion; the kitchen; weather; or in the mood. To me it’s like the Aperol Spritz, anything with a hint of pineapple, silky Hong Kong-style milk tea and, after a recent visit to CHAAT in Rosewood, the service so sweet and delicious. by Coconut Lassie.

Typically, when it comes to Indian cuisine, mango lassi takes first place; a sweet and slightly tangy sip that soothes palettes weighed down with rich curries and smoky tandoors. But it turns out that the Coconut Lassie – sampled on a whim in an attempt to go beyond my usual – is a worthy alternative. It is less syrupy, replaced by a slightly salty aftertaste tempered by a light coconut finish. The CHAAT version is made from a classic yogurt base, mixed with a creamy coconut puree and the added infusion of various spices, including green cardamom, for an aromatic touch. This is a delicious gem among the taste-verified Indian street food inspired plates that I really recommend you opt for. – Lorria Sahmet, editor

The beverage: Sunset Sufferer (HK $ 100)

There is no easy way to describe the beauty of an establishment like the Quality Goods Club; it’s a restaurant, a cocktail bar, a concert hall, a nightclub – a multifaceted space with multiple hyphens promising the best of times. A kind of time alive in the moment. And that’s the spiel I’m going to let you, as far as this picture goes, say, live in the moment. I had a Great time. A moment of quality.

The Suffering Sunset (HK $ 100) is something you go down and then ask for another. It’s a refreshing mix of Ballantine’s blend of Scotch whiskey, gin, apricot, ginger, lemon and malt mist, arriving at the table with a shade of light yellow that floats to deep orange; sunset, they said, after all. Otherwise, the Frozen Martini (HK $ 120) is also pretty perfect. Just like their crab bisque! – Joey Wong, editor

The beverage: The Secret Mary

The Secret Mary has everything I could ask for in a cocktail: salt! Pepper! Tomato juice! Edible snacks! (And of course, lots of booze.) But instead of the standard vodka, the Ami / Wood Ear team swapped the spirit of agave in the fray, throwing a smoky, spicy mouthfest that activates all of them. my favorite taste buds at the same time. After dinner, change things up at the bar, where Christopher Ho has assembled one of Hong Kong’s rarest and most unique whiskey collections. If whiskey isn’t your thing, the expert staff also have a wide selection of other cocktails on deck. Or try my favorite, a tequila soda, one of the coldest in town. – Nathan Erickson, editor

Sunset Grill Tung Chung

The beverage: Lantau Mary (HK $ 110)

I praised this darling during my time here, but I’ll gladly say it again: this is arguably the best rendition of a Bloody Mary I’ve had in my life so far. And this is not an exaggeration. Infused with local dry shrimp oil from Tai O fishing village, the salinity and umami kick took the cocktail to an impressive level. Real conversation – everyone should make the trip to Tung Chung just to try this cocktail. Thank me later. – Sandra Kwong, features editor

The beverage: The G Room Sangria Jar (HK $ 428)

I mean, just watch it. It is probably one of the the prettiest sangria presentations that I have seen. We loved being able to create our own personalized fruit glasses before drifting off into a night of wine-infused debauchery paired with excellent Padron peppers. – SK

The beverage: Yamanashi (HK $ 120)

There is a lot of depth behind this magnificent cocktail. Named after the Japanese prefecture famous for its scenic landscape and prime wine region, Yamanashi consists of a base of red wine mixed with smooth sake. The icing on the cake is mixologist Lok Gurung’s incredible dashi-pickled cucumber pickle and soybean as a garnish. The whole trip is incredibly good. – SK

The beverage: Absolute Matteo

If you’re looking for a cocktail to cool off from the sweltering heat while standing on Peel Street, can we suggest a strawberry mojito? Nicknamed “Absolute Matteo”, the Japanese-inspired cocktail is made with Grace “Cor Cor Red” rum, House Awamori Falernum, Peychaud’s bitter, strawberry Oleo Saccharum, mint and ginger. We suggest you sip it slowly, as it is very easy to drink but packs a punch. – Austin Miao, Brand Content Manager

The beverage: Hot Virgin Chili Mojito (HK $ 42)

I opted for the smoldering baskets of familiar and heartwarming momos (and how they delivered!) But I left thinking, maybe dreaming, of this mocktail. Presented in a transparent and highly instagrammable box, this signature mojito contains all the ingredients you would expect (fresh lemon and mint) but also Nepalese peppers, which gives it a unique boost and instantly transports me home in the Uttar Pradesh – we make the border Nepal, after all! – Sakina Abidi, editorial assistant

The beverage: Frozen pineapple margarita

There’s nothing revolutionary about the frozen margarita. Typically syrupy and machine-poured at dodgy beach bars, it’s a slightly watered-down version of our favorite tequila-based cocktail, right? Not this one. Everything I was looking for in a summer drink and more, Chino has a creative line of frozen margaritas throughout the season. This month, the modern Mexican fusion eatery has struck the perfect sweet and sour balance with a pineapple tequila number that’s so drinkable; only available for a limited time though, so you’ll need to be quick to sip this one before redeeming it. – Lexi Davey, editor-in-chief
