An early morning fire on Thursday damages a restaurant in Soquel

An early Thursday morning fire damaged a restaurant in Soquel, according to the Santa Cruz County Central Fire District.

Firefighters responded at 4:26 a.m. Thursday to the reported fire at Michael’s on Main restaurant at 2591 Main St., where a nearby business owner saw flames and smoke coming from the north side of the building, firefighters said .

Crews extinguished the blaze in about 45 minutes and contained it to the kitchens and offices, although the blaze caused heat and smoke damage throughout the building, according to the fire district.

The fire also damaged nearby power lines, causing a power outage to several adjacent buildings.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but its origin area appears to be the prep area next to the kitchen, firefighters said.

The owners of Michael’s on Main wrote on their website that the restaurant, which often featured live music, is closed indefinitely and all upcoming shows have been canceled, but they plan to rebuild and reopen.
