| Mango's Acquires Bombay | |||||||||||
| Earlier this year we signed the papers to purchase Bombay Bicycle Club. I have been lusting over this location ever since Tom Jackson and I opened Shooter McGee's up the street almost twenty years ago. It is probably the best location in the West End of Alexandria, situated a block from the new Cameron Station development and almost across the street from the new library it's at ground zero. Since Eastport became Mango Mike's three years ago, we have been dire need of more space for all those Caribbean loving customers. Great write ups by the Washingtonian Magazine, including a listing for the last two years as one of the top 100 Best Bargain Restaurants, has brought us a wave of new customers and loyal fans. And even though everyone has been very patient, no one likes to have to wait for a dinner table. It was time for bigger space. | |||||||||||

A New Zealand firm has owned the Bombay chain for the last ten years and based on advice from their financial analyst they have decided to eliminate all their holdings in the States. Within five days of hearing of it's availability we had a hand shake with Mark Rouleau, CEO of Bombay. This Bombay was one of the last to be sold and we're extremely excited about the possibilities it offers. Some of you old timers probably remember this space as being Smugglers Inn (how many of you danced the Hustle at this location) from 1974 to Bombay's remake in 1980. It's a great building with the unique roof lines generating a dramatic architectural look. Over 9000 square foot in size, next to the new Clyde's, it's the largest restaurant in the West End. With over 270 seats it offers plenty of room, and parking, for the growing West End. We plan on doing some reconfiguring to enable us to have a party room for private parties with a maximum seating of 60. This, during private parties, would reduce dining room space, but it would provide for desperately needed space for private groups. Besides expensive hotel space there are not that many private dining rooms available in the City of Alexandria. Noted restaurant designer Walter Gagliano (DC Coast, Jaleo, Cafe Atlantico, Ramparts, Cafe Deluxe) has been hired to transform Bombay into a Caribbean paradise. Walter promises not to loose the charm of the original Mango's but yet give it a new look and excitement. New York artist Dianne Hoppmann (Mango's at Bethany Beach, Tara Thai, Cafe Tom Tom) has promised a new array of murals and artwork to help in the transformation. Stay tuned to this website for more details and progress photos. I would also love any comments you may have regarding this transistion - just eMail me. As always none of these projects would be possible without your support and the staff, along with my family, greatly appreciate all your business.
Sincerely,
Mango Mike Anderson |
